Baniyas square (also known as Nasr or Jamal Abd el-Nasser square) is located in a section of the city called Deira. The square represents
the heart of the central business district and is known as a meeting place for
Dubai
’s low-income expatriate community. Mostly low-income laborers from India,
Pakistan, the Philippines and elsewhere dominate the space. Absent are any
locals, with a few exceptions. In spite of this absence, the area has a high
recognizability among locals due to the variety of shops that offer bargains;
also its history as the center of the city in many ways signifying its entry
into modernity makes it memorable. The square and its surroundings is a setting
for the exchange of messages and receiving news from home. Particularly
attractive are the green lawns, in the middle of the space, which are a place
for people to sleep, eat or simply chat with others. Also, street corners,
particularly an area near HSBC bank is a node for people, who simply stand
there and talk while observing passersby. The overall atmosphere is one of
relaxation and enjoyment.
As of 2007 the square has been closed off due to construction related to the
Dubai Metro Project.
